Teaching and Mentoring

Teaching and mentoring are important skills to acquire and hone as they are essential to success both within academia and beyond. GradPathways partners with the Center for Educational Effectiveness to provide teacher training. GradPathways offers engaging mentoring workshops for both mentees who would like to get the most out of mentorship and those who wish to learn how to mentor.

Teaching and Mentoring Skills

Review these skills, if you  to identify the resources you need.  Consider if you have already developed the skill enough for your future career plans, expect to develop the skill as part of your program, or need to find additional resources to support developing the skill.

  1. Understand and practice evidence-based pedagogical methods.
  2. Adopt and communicate a reflective teaching philosophy.
  3. Design courses, syllabi, lesson plans, and assignments.
  4. Demonstrate and facilitate active learning.
  5. Mediate interpersonal and intellectual conflict in the classroom.
  6. Use instructional design principles to develop and/or leverage educational technology.
  7. Adapt pedagogical methods to hybrid and online learning spaces.
  8. Co-teach or team teach with another instructor.
  9. Promote student well-being in all instructional settings.
  10. Assess student learning and skill development.
  11. Assess the effectiveness of teaching and mentoring activities.
  12. Design a formative assessment plan and adapt my instruction method based on the results.
  13. Establish a respectful and inclusive learning community.
  14. Build and maintain productive relationships as a mentor.
  15. Build and maintain productive relationships as a mentee.

  • Teaching Assistant Orientation
  • TA Orientation is designed to help graduate students succeed in their role as TAs at UC Davis by introducing them to the principles and practices of effective teaching. In-person sessions emphasize practical teaching skills and strategies, and include topics such as establishing a positive classroom atmosphere on the first day, leading effective discussions, presenting information clearly, and grading efficiently.

  • Individualized Advising
  • One-on-One mentoring or specialized programming to meet your individual needs is available. 
    Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) Consultations 

    The CEE offers a variety of consultation types to provide you with feedback on your teaching, strategies to achieve your teaching goals, and instructional resources to inform your teaching practice. All consultations are free, confidential, and available to all instructors, including full- and part-time faculty, graduate students, and Postdoctoral Scholars. 

    - Classroom ObservationsGain a better understanding of your teaching skills, your time management skills, your students' involvement in your course.

    - Mid-Quarter Classroom Interview (MQI): The mid-quarter interview (MQI) is a method of getting anonymous feedback from your students midway through the quarter.

    - Video Recording with Playback ConsultationA video recording consultation can help you analyze your teaching and reflect on your students’ learning experience.

    - Statement of Teaching Philosophy Consultation: Writing your statement of teaching philosophy is a crucial step toward preparing to go on the academic job market.

    Teaching Assistant Consultant Program

    TA Consultants (TACs) work as coaches and consultants to their fellow Teaching Assistants on campus by participating in training and professional development regarding teaching and learning in the college classroom, planning and delivering workshops and special programs on teaching and learning topics, and providing individualized consultations on teaching and teaching improvement. TAC Fellows receive a quarterly fellowship and gain valuable experience for a career in college teaching or educational development.
